Out of the Cup
Sunday 30th November saw the U11 play the rescheduled Quarter Final of the BYFL cup against league leaders, Poppies.
Our squad was heavily depleted due to family & other sporting events because of the reschedules date and we went into the fixture with only 6 fit & available U11 players. Therefore I had to borrow 4 U10 players and even then my luck ran out as one of those was injured in their morning game! So, 9 players inc 3 U10's against the unbeaten league leaders. Tough....
After a few minutes of opening exchanges, we were quickly 1, then 2-0 down. Poppies were just too quick moving the ball & too strong and committed.
A few more goals against before we started to string a few passes together and U10 Daniel was brought down in the box. I selected Emre to step up and take as he had missed his penalty a few weeks earlier & we had hit the post in the last game too. Emre powered the spot kick home which did his confidence the world of good. 1-5 at half time.
My half time team talk consisted on concentrating on the improvements the team needed to make in being quicker to challenge, quicker to pass & to try to split the defence. I also challenged them to score one more goal.
The second half was much the same from Poppies, but U10 keeper Jamie was playing superbly & stopped us going even further behind on many occasions. We started to get used to the pace & intensity of the match and slowly began to string a few passes together and fashion a few half chances.
About 10 minutes in, we won a free kick on the RHS of their box & Emre stepped up to take again. His powerful, over the wall shot was unsaveable. 2-5.
It remained that way for most of the second half - us challenging more & Jamie saving Poppies attacks. I was getting confident that we might 'win' the second half which would have been a major achievement. It wasn't to be though, as with 5 minutes left, a back pass to Jamie led to another Poppies goal and then another shortly after. Final score 2-7.
No one expected us to win this match & with the resources at my disposal I was very proud of the 9 who battled so hard. Our second half showing was encouraging against the toughest opposition. Zak & Aaron (out of position) made some superb challenges, Emre headed the ball & was much tougher than usual - and scored 2, Ed began to play those quick passes that we saw last season & had a really tough time against an unbelievably quick attacker, yet never moaned. Elliott ran his heart out and impacted the game much more second half as well as tracking back to defend loads. Jack didn't see much of the ball up front but kept running the whole game. Liam & Daniel from U10 were a bit shocked at the pace of fully fledged U11 game, but got used to it after a while and on occasions were equal to the U11 and made a real difference with their passing. And as for Jamie in goal - wow, what a performance. Superb.
Out of the cup, yes - but proud of the lads who gave their all for their shirt.
