Match Report 23.03.14 v Milford. 1-0 Win

What an enjoyable morning of football between two sides who try to play the game the right way.

Two very evenly matched sides going up against each other with no bad feeling or histrionics.

Both teams had first half chances and the game ebbed and flowed between both goal mouths. there was some nice play between Harvey and Elliott and our defensive partnership of Marco and Zack has things under control though as did Hermione in goal (great clean sheet for the defensive team!). 0-0 half time.

At half time we changed things a bit to bring Oliver into the midfield to counter Milford's huge no9 who did cause some problems. this seemed to work as we had much more attacking play second half as Joe & Marcos put in fighting performances.

Our goal came from a period of pressure and Ed picked up the ball on the left, played sideways to Oliver who did the same for an oncoming Marco who smashed a low shot in from the edge of the box. A really good goal.

After that we had a few other half chances but it was a very tight game. The main danger was from their 9 who must be twice Elliott's size. A real danger at set pieces (as we found to our cost in the reverse fixture when he scored two headed corner goals). the team had learnt their lesson though and they made sure he didn't punish us again this way, with the help of a fine goalie showing from H. a 1-0 victory

most pleasing though was the spirit in which the game was played and the progression of the players. the difference between the start of the season and now is quite staggering. substitutes were a nightmare today because they all played so well and the side didn't need changing. and then when subs did go on, they were equally as good! tricky bit fantastic position for a coach to be in. we now have selection problems!

Match Report U10 (6) v Burton (1) 16.03.14

a very good performance by the team on another lovely, sunny, spring morning.

the team lined up with Oliver up front and that turned out to be a fantastic decision by me! ;-). within a few minutes we were seeing one touch passes and excellent movement which led to an early shot from the Captain. top corner : 1-0

after that we dominated the first half, with Oliver scoring again and Ed also.  Oliver nailed his hatrick shortly after. unbelievably, these were his first goals of the season!

With such a commanding lead we could afford to change a few positions around and this did lead to us conceding one. However this did mean we could take a look at a few players in different slots with one eye on next season. Elliott had a good spell in the middle of the park which is not his usual place & Marcos and Joe both had time at the back and coped well.

the second half didn't quite have the passing cutting edge of the first, but we did witness a lot of shots (one from Emre in particular must have really stung the keepers hands) which is something I asked of the team before kick off.

Their keeper was actually on good form and made some stunning stops. Once, Elliott tried a shot from the edge of the box and Oliver just got a tiny flick on it to divert it to the right. somehow, the keeper managed to throw out an arm for a fabulous reaction save. well done to him!

Late on, Marcos took a very long, speculative shot which somehow squirmed under the keeper to give us a 6-1 victory.

I think I missed one of Oliver's goals off here but I can't recall the move that led to it!

overall, a good day at the office with players improving now all the time. the players are now looking way more organised and are paying attention to team shape and communication.

Match report v Everton (away) 9/3/13

a hard fought draw away at Everton on a beautiful sunny morning.

the team started off ok although the fluid passing from recent weeks was not there. we forced a few corners and got a lucky break from a Hermione taken one. the ball went in off an Everton player to give us a one nil lead.

after that it was fairly even and eventually a long range shot got lost in the bright sunshine and the unlucky Joe in goal saw the ball slip through his hands. he made up for it later though with a good few brilliant saves !

there were a fair few strong challenges going in from Everton players and Oliver got the worst of one as he caught a boot full straight in the face. He's a big lad is Oliver, so I have no idea what the other lads boot was doing that high. Whilst I was tending to a cut nose and cheek, we apparently let in a scrappy goal (I didn't see it!). 2-1 down at halftime

After the break, we survived another couple of scares until Oliver bravely came back on and finally we started to pass the ball much better. A lot of the lads were playing out of their regular postions today but the last third of the game saw us start to really put pressure on their goal. I lost count of the shots we had and Elliott swears he should have had a penalty. the lads just didn't have their shooting boots on today!

I didn't think it was going to be our day until yet another foul almost on the half way line gave us one final chance. I sent everyone forward and Captain Oliver launched a huge ball into the box. Elliott ducked out of the way and Zak (standing in front of the keeper) managed the slightest of headers to lift the ball into the roof of the net to give us a well earned, last second draw!

I guess that's football - you don't always play well but if you have guts, spirit and determination you can still get a result.

on to the next game...

Match Report 2nd March 2014. Greenfields 2 v Kingswood 0

always a tough fixture this one and having suffered a frustrating 2-1 defeat in the away fixture, all were keen to turn that around.

it was a pretty scrappy game, if truth be told, but we had the better of the chances. our first goal came from a punt upfield from goalkeeper Hermione which went over everyone's head. however, Ed was quick enough to outpace the defender and lob the Kingswood keeper with a deft touch. half time 1-0

the second half was pretty much the same until we got a free kick halfway into their half for a blatant handball. up stepped team captain Oliver to fire one towards goal. Marcos got a very clever little flick on to put us 2-0 ahead.

we were never in danger after that and the reunited defensive partnership of Marco and Oliver were superb. never giving an inch.

we were very organised throughout the whole pitch and I was very pleased to see the training ground work coming through again, especially the work we put in on covering for each other.

special mention for Zak who played excellently on the wing, yet in a more defensive position. he found the ball at his feet and acres of space inside their half. he drove forward and unleashed a cracking shot which I was sure was in but hit the post. so unlucky, but I was really pleased with Zak's confidence and technique.

a solid and pleasing performance from everyone.
